part - 2
Extinguish the negative feelings
Once the large repository of negative feelings in social situations is
extinguished with CAER treatment, High Functioning Aspergers Syndrome children are more able to
spontaneously access their social skills in real life situations.
Because socialization problems are central to HFA, therapy needs to include
the family. Reframing the HFA's behaviors can decrease scapegoating within
the family. Siblings may become more sympathetic and less isolating or
hostile toward the HFA child.
Family members can engage in role-playing to teaching him how to deal with
typical social difficulties. Joining clubs that provide for social contact
around well-defined activities such as stamp, chess, train, and computer
clubs should be encouraged. The structure provided by the merit-badge
system can make scouting a vehicle to enhance self-esteem. Accepting, adult
supervised groups are best. Church youth groups are often ideal because
there may be minimal scapegoating of unusual children. |
